Earth Education

Nature was chosen as a central focus in our curriculum for many reasons. To name a few of these:

1. Most children are fascinated with and interested in life that is all around them, having this as a main theme is meaningful and immediate.
2. We want children to have the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of how all of nature works as well as to have a real and personal relationship to this earth, their home.
3. Studying nature provides opportunities for many service and community outreach projects.

We study the earth every year, giving the children and in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of life on this planet, and even beyond. A great deal of our earth education work is experiential, hands on done in the field. We hike and observe, play act, visit any place that might tell us more about our place on this earth, bring in specialists, and look for ways to create a smaller footprint. Running River also is a “green” school in every way financially possible.
